Austrian Foreign Minister Schallenberg to become interim chancellor

Alexander Schallenberg will take over as chancellor after Karl Nehammer’s resignation due to the breakdown of coalition talks between Austria’s main parties.

President Alexander Van der Bellen would “entrust” Schallenberg the top position, according to the presidential press office. The foreign minister will hold two posts until the next government comes to power.

The main parties initially turned a cold shoulder to the Freedom Party (FPÖ), which won a majority of seats in last September’s elections.

However, after talks between the main parties collapsed last week, Van der Bellen on Monday tasked national-oriented leader Herbert Kickl with forming a new government.
