The US Embassy in Russia issued a warning Thursday that Americans should avoid large events in Moscow for the next 48 hours.
The embassy said it was due to a potential terrorist threat in the city, but did not elaborate, mentioning concerts as a potential target. The alert reads, which was also made on X by the US State Department:
“The Embassy is monitoring reports that extremists have imminent plans to target large gatherings in Moscow, to include concerts, and US citizens should be advised to avoid large gatherings over the next 48 hours. As a reminder, our Travel Advisory for Russia is Level 4 – Do Not Travel.”
The US State Department did not immediately respond to emailed questions Thursday night.
The British Foreign Office posted a similar warning with a reference to the US embassy, the agency also recommends British citizens to refrain from travelling to Russia.
The Russian government announced early Thursday that it had killed Islamic State militants planning a terrorist attack on a Moscow synagogue, according to the English-language Moscow Times newspaper. It was unclear whether the operation was linked to the US State Department warning.
