Azerbaijan’s ruling party wins parliamentary elections

Azerbaijan‘s ruling New Azerbaijan Party (YAP) won the parliamentary elections, according to preliminary results.

Central Election Commission Chairman Mazahir Panahov announced the names of the candidates with the highest number of votes at a press conference. According to preliminary results, YAP, led by President Ilham Aliyev, won 68 seats in the National Assembly.

A total of 44 independent candidates were also elected as MPs. The Civic Solidarity Party received 3 seats, the Justice, Law and Democracy Party won 2 seats. The Great Azerbaijan Party, Democratic Reforms Party, Great Creation Party, Republican Alternative Party, Motherland Party, Azerbaijan National Independence Party, National Front Party, and Azerbaijan Democratic Enlightenment Party each secured one seat.

However, only 37.27 per cent of some 6,421,000 voters cast their ballots. Some 990 candidates reportedly competed for 125 seats.
