Belgium investigates alleged corruption in European Parliament

Belgian authorities launched a sweeping investigation into alleged corruption within the European Parliament, leading to multiple arrests and searches across Belgium and Portugal, Reuters reported.

The probe, announced on Thursday, focuses on suspected bribery, forgery, and the use of false documents, with allegations that these activities have been carried out “very discreetly” since 2021.

The Federal Police conducted 21 searches in the Brussels region, as well as in Flanders, Wallonia, and Portugal. While Belgian prosecutors did not disclose the names or roles of those involved, they revealed that the alleged corruption had occurred under the guise of commercial lobbying.

Bribery, lavish gifts allegations

According to prosecutors, the corruption involved various forms of illicit influence, including payments for taking specific political positions and excessive gifts such as food, travel expenses, and regular invitations to football matches. The activities are believed to have been part of a broader scheme to sway decision-making within the European Parliament.

In addition to corruption, the investigation aims to uncover evidence of money laundering. Several documents and objects were seized during the searches, which prosecutors hope will shed light on the extent of the alleged wrongdoing.

The probe highlights growing concerns about the integrity of EU institutions and the influence of commercial lobbying on legislative processes. The European Parliament, as one of the key decision-making bodies of the European Union, has long been scrutinised for its transparency and accountability.

While the investigation is ongoing, the lack of specific details about the individuals involved has fueled speculation about the potential scale of the scandal. The involvement of Portuguese authorities suggests that the alleged corruption may have cross-border implications.

As the investigation progresses, Belgian prosecutors are expected to provide further updates.
