Bild: German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s grandfather was a Nazi and a Wehrmacht officer

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock’s grandfather was a Wehrmacht officer and an ardent supporter of Nazism, Bild reported citing a surfaced dossier.

Documents from Wehrmacht archives indicate that Colonel Waldemar Baerbock (1913-2016) not only served as an engineer in an anti-aircraft gun repair unit, but was also an “unequivocal National Socialist.”

The dossier emphasises that he was a devoted follower of the ideology, had read Hitler’s Mein Kampf and was fully committed to National Socialism. In 1944 he was awarded the highest honour – Hitler’s “Cross of Military Merit” with swords.

The publication notes that Annalena Baerbock often shared stories about her grandfather at memorial events and highlighted lessons learnt from his wartime fate. Foreign Ministry officials said that Annalena Baerbock “was not familiar with these documents.”

The German Foreign Ministry responded to Bild’s enquiry that the head of the ministry was “not aware” of the documents.
