Boris Johnson criticises David Cameron and British establishment over arms sales to Israel

On Friday, British Foreign Secretary David Cameron as well as the British Establishment came under harsh criticism by former Prime Minister Boris Johnson, POLITICO reported.

The former prime minister accused David Cameron of failing to completely reject proposals to halt British arms sales to Israel and of helping Hamas in the process. Boris Johnson wrote in Daily Mail column:

“If you want an example of the death-wish of Western civilisation, I give you the current proposal from members of the British establishment that this country should ban arms sales to Israel.”

The criticism of the foreign secretary came amid a heated debate in Britain over whether arms exports to Israel should continue to be allowed after the killing of World Central Kitchen aid workers in an Israeli strike. He added:

“If you want evidence of government madness, it appears that Foreign Office lawyers are busily canvassing the idea – which has not yet, as far as I can tell, been rejected by the foreign secretary himself.”

Beyond that, there is no consensus in the cabinet on the issue as government lawyers ponder whether or not Israel is violating international law in Gaza. Howewer. Cutting off such aid to Israel would be “willing the military defeat of Israel and the victory of Hamas,” according to Johnson.

The most famous example of the Johnson-Cameron rivalry is the taking of opposing sides on the Brexit issue: the UK’s vote to leave the EU stops there, supporting Cameron’s premiership and accelerating Johnson’s ascent to the top of British politics.
