Josep Borrell said Friday that Israel funded the creation of the Palestinian militant group Hamas.
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell said Friday that Israel funded the creation of the Palestinian militant group Hamas, thus refuting Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s claims.
Opponents of the Israeli government and some world media have accused Netanyahu’s government of years of support for the ruling Hamas group in Gaza.
“Yes, Hamas was financed by the government of Israel in an attempt to weaken the Palestinian Authority led by Fatah,” Borrell said in a speech at the University of Valladolid in Spain without elaborating.
Borrell also called for a humanitarian pause, the release of hostages and an end to the war in the Gaza Strip. The international community’s main priority should be to prevent a worsening of the conflict in the Red Sea without exacerbating tensions with Yemen’s Houthi rebels.
The Israeli Government has launched a counter-offensive that has killed over 24,700 Palestinians, according to Palestinian health authorities.
