Britain bans imports of meat and dairy products from Europe ahead of Easter

New rules on what travellers can bring into the UK have been introduced just before Easter, when hundreds of thousands of travellers will swoop on the island.

British tourists have been banned from bringing back meat and dairy products from Europe, which will hit travellers leaving for Easter.

Under the new rules, travellers returning to the UK will not be able to bring back beef, pork, lamb, mutton, venison, goat meat or dairy products.

This means tourists travelling to the continent for the long Easter weekend will no longer be able to bring small amounts of cheese and meat – such as a triangle of French brie or a German sausage – to make a treat for a loved one or to eat with gusto themselves on their return.

“If you are travelling over the Easter weekend, check what you can and cannot bring in,” the government warned.

A social media post from the government’s official account sought to play down the impact of Brexit on the changes, emphasising that the measures “are about protecting farmers from the spread of foot-and-mouth disease” amid a rise in cases on the continent. There are currently no such cases in the UK.
