The index of consumer confidence in the UK in January fell by 5 points to minus 22 points, the lowest since November 2023, according to the report of the analytical company NIQ GfK.
A month earlier the indicator was minus 17 points. The consensus forecast of analysts suggested a decline in the indicator to minus 18 points, according to Trading Economics.
All components of the confidence index decreased this month compared to December. The sub-index of consumers’ assessment of the general economic situation over the last year fell by 7 points to minus 46 points. At the same time, the indicator of Briton’s forecasts regarding the general economic situation in the country in the next 12 months decreased by 8 points, to minus 34 points.
The sub-index of expectations regarding personal finances for the next 12 months fell by 3 points to minus 2 points.
The indicator assessing the willingness of consumers to spend money on large purchases decreased by 4 points to minus 20 points.
The average value of the confidence index for the period from 1981 to 2024 is minus 10.9 points. The record high of 10 points was reached in June 1987. The minimum of minus 49 points was recorded in September 2022.
