The European Commission has demanded clarification from Education Minister Galin Tsokov on the law banning LGBT propaganda in schools.
The minister has two weeks to respond, an EC spokesman said. Then an assessment will be launched as to whether the texts of the law violate European legislation. The letter to the education minister was sent by European Commissioner for Equality Helena Dalli on August 13.
In early August, the parliament adopted in two readings in one day amendments to the law on pre-school and school education introduced by the Renaissance party.
The law prohibits the dissemination of information about “non-traditional sexual orientation” and identities other than biological sex. Its supporters want to ensure that schools do not have discussions about LGBT issues, which they believe would be propaganda. Children should be protected from being induced into homosexuality or gender reassignment.
This is the second European institution to react to the new texts. A week ago, Council of Europe Commissioner for Human Rights Michael O’Flaherty called on President Rumen Radev to veto the law, but it was promulgated on August 15.
