Following EU support to protect the external borders of Bulgaria and Romania, the European Commission reports positive results.
Olivier Onidi, Deputy Director-General in charge of Schengen and Internal Security in the EU, reported on progress in returning migrants without the right to stay in the EU, improving asylum procedures and significant gains in the fight against human traffickers.
Onidi also met with MEPs from the Committee on Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs.
Most importantly, we have been able to improve co-operation at all levels; this has led to an increased presence of the European border service Frontex.
The head of “Border Police” Anton Zlatanov pointed out that the most difficult border in the EU stretched between Bulgaria and Turkey.
“We invest huge resources for its protection but to our great regret in 2022 and 2023, six Bulgarian officers lost their lives in the performance of their official duties along this border.”
