Bulgarian farmers to receive €100m in state subsidies after protest threats

Bulgaria’s government will allocate 100 million euros in state subsidies to local farmers who have threatened new protests over imports of Ukrainian agricultural products, according to Euractiv.

The interim government is keen to avoid further protests ahead of early elections. Bulgarians will go to the polls on 27 October for the seventh time in three and a half years.

Half of the state subsidies will go to grain and oilseed producers, with the rest of the money intended to support livestock breeders, beekeepers and fruit and vegetable producers.

Following threats of protests in February 2024, the Bulgarian government promised more than 160 million euros to farmers who warned of the risk of mass bankruptcies due to imports of cheaper goods from Ukraine.

The farmers also stated that they would protest against Brussels’ environmental demands based on the Green Deal.
