Bulgarian President introduces new caretaker cabinet

Ministers of Bulgaria’s interim government led by Dimitar Glavchev were sworn in at the country’s parliament on Tuesday, Bulgarian media reported.

The special session of the National Assembly called to swear in the government lasted only eight minutes.

National Police chief Atanas Ilkov will succeed Kalin Stoyanov as Bulgaria’s Interior Minister in the interim cabinet. Foreign Minister Ivan Kondov has been appointed as Foreign Minister, a post previously held by Glavchev.

Bulgarian President Rumen Radev on August 27 signed a decree to hold early parliamentary elections on October 27.

Radev told Glavchev:

I want to congratulate you for listening to the public’s calls to reduce tension and hold fair elections.

The vote will come after the three main political forces in the current parliament – the conservative GERB party and the pro-European coalition, which includes the Continuing Change and Democratic Bulgaria parties, as well as “There is Such a People party” – failed to form a government following elections held in June.

Bulgaria’s power crisis has been ongoing since 2021. During this time, the country has changed six cabinets of ministers.
