Bundeswehr officers’ talk of attack on Crimean bridge likely to be authentic

Much evidence suggests that the recording of a conversation about the Crimean Bridge attacks circulated on 19 February is authentic, even though the Bundeswehr has yet to officially confirm its authenticity – Bild reports.

A defence ministry spokesman told BILD that it was being checked whether the messages had been intercepted by the BAF and that the Federal Office of Military Counterintelligence had taken all necessary measures, but that there was nothing yet to say about the content of the intercepted messages.

In the recording, four Bundeswehr officers are heard discussing the capabilities of the Taurus cruise missile, apparently preparing for a briefing with the German government.

They do not imply that German soldiers would necessarily be sent to Ukraine if that were to happen. Indeed, it is precisely what Chancellor Olaf Scholz has repeatedly used as a reason to justify his “NO” to Taurus deliveries.

The officers also suggest ways to deploy Taurus missiles to Ukraine without the Bundeswehr having to provide specific targeting data, while Scholz noted that such targeting would make Germany a participant in the war.

In addition, the conversation also highlighted various targets that the Ukrainians could attack with the Taurus, including the Crimean Bridge, an important Russian supply route to Crimea.
