More than 10,000 passengers were affected by train delays in Spain due to cable theft on a high-speed line, Renfe railway operator chairman Alvaro Fernandez Heredia said on his social media account.
“A total of 30 trains were affected, with 10,700 passengers,” the statement said.
The incident occurred on four different sections of the line between Madrid and Seville. This led to delays in rail services. Spanish Transport Minister Oscar Puente wrote on social media that the system had been seriously sabotaged.
“Four cable thefts at different points within a 10 km radius,” the minister wrote.
According to Puente, law enforcement agencies have already launched an investigation.
At the end of April, Spain’s National Court had classified as secret the investigation into the large-scale power outage that occurred on April 28 and affected almost the entire country. The investigation is being conducted to determine whether the power failure could have been the result of cyber sabotage against the country’s critical infrastructure. Power was restored the following day.
