Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney stated on Friday that Ottawa intends to seek recognition of the State of Palestine at the UN level.
“Canada is committed to the two-state solution as the basis for peace and security for both Israelis and Palestinians,” Carney said on social media. He added that the country would actively pursue this goal in international forums, including a UN conference of foreign ministers.
Carney also expressed concern about the deteriorating humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip.
“Israel’s control over the distribution of humanitarian aid must be replaced by full access under the supervision of international organisations. Significant amounts of Canadian aid are currently blocked, while the civilian population is suffering from hunger. Denying humanitarian aid is a violation of international law,” he said.
Canada also called on all parties to engage in good-faith negotiations aimed at an immediate ceasefire.
Earlier, French President Emmanuel Macron announced plans to recognise Palestine as a state in September 2025. In response, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu strongly condemned the initiative, calling it a threat to his country’s security.
