Canada seeks private talks with India to resolve diplomatic crisis

Canada is seeking private talks as India has demanded the withdrawal of 41 Canadian diplomats.

Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated that the country was seeking private talks with New Delhi to resolve the diplomatic crisis.

We are in contact with the government of India. We take Canadian diplomats’ safety very seriously and we will continue to engage privately because we think diplomatic conversations are best when they remain private.

India on Tuesday asked Canada to recall around 40 diplomats by October 10. The government has also reportedly threatened to revoke diplomatic immunity from any Canadian diplomat who remained in the country beyond the deadline.

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Tuesday that his country did not seek to escalate the situation with India and his government “want(s) to be on the ground in India to help Canadian families.”

The diplomatic situation between the two nations deteriorated after Trudeau’s statement about the “potential” involvement of Indian agents in the killing of Khalistan terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. On 18 June, two gunmen shot dead the Canadian citizen in British Columbia.

India called the allegations “absurd” and “motivated” and expelled a senior Canadian diplomat from the country in response.
