Canada, UK strengthen economic co-operation

Canada and the United Kingdom have announced on Monday the creation of a joint working group aimed at strengthening economic ties between the two countries ahead of the G7 summit in Alberta.

Creation of a trade working group The announcement was made in a joint statement when British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited Canada for the first time as head of government.

During meetings with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, they discussed deepening existing partnerships and creating new economic opportunities. The working group is expected to present its recommendations to both prime ministers within six months.

Priority areas for co-operation

The new working group will focus on overcoming market access barriers and deepening co-operation in promising areas such as digital trade and artificial intelligence infrastructure. These sectors are considered key to the economic resilience of both countries. Canada and the UK are committed to making their economies more competitive and innovative.

Deepening relations and military co-operation Canada has committed to introducing legislation to ratify the UK’s accession to the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership. This agreement includes 11 countries, such as Japan and Australia.

In addition to economic ties, the British-Canadian joint statement emphasises the expansion of defence co-operation between the two countries. The establishment of a working group and the confirmation of trade and defence commitments are a step towards closer co-operation between Canada and the United Kingdom, especially in the context of global economic change.
