Canadian Labour Minister Steve MacKinnon proposed appointing a special mediator for a 90-day period for the Montreal port workers’ strike, according to Reuters.
MacKinnon said there would be no strikes or lockouts during the extreme bargaining period. However, talks between the Maritime Employers Association (MEA) and Montreal Longshoremen’s union remain deadlocked over wages.
The parties will have to submit responses to the Ministry of Labour no later than Friday, 18 October, according to the MEA.
The strike affected the Viau and Maisonneuve terminals, which accounted for about 40 per cent of the port’s container traffic.
