Following the resignation of the Parliament speaker over the invitation of a former Ukrainian man who was found to have served under Nazi command, a Jewish group is calling on Canada’s PM to expel a 98-year-old Yaroslav Hunka from the country he allegedly entered illegally.
The resignation of Canadian House of Commons speaker Anthony Rota came a day after he invited and honoured a Ukrainian, who had fought alongside the Nazis, at a speech by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. However, members of the Canadian Jewish community are calling for additional measures.
Meir Weinstein, CEO of Israel Now, an organisation dedicated to promoting Jewish values and seeking justice for Holocaust survivors in Canada, said the Speaker’s resignation is not enough and more needs to be done after what he called a shocking incident.
“No, no, it’s not enough at all. Not only that but the speaker who I guess you could refer to right now as the former speaker of the House, personally invited this Nazi war criminal, SS collaborator from the Ukraine to the House of Commons to be given an honor… There’s a lot to uncover here and unpack. It’s horrific.”
Weinstein also claimed that Hunka was the author of a blog by former SS members where he bragged and stated that the years from 1943 to 1945 were the happiest ones of his life.
There are other incidents of antisemitism in North Bay as well and that’s where he’s from. So there’s a serious problem of antisemitism and these Nazi war criminals, they still believe that ideology and they teach it.
