Car drives into crowd in centre of German city

A car drove into a crowd in the southwestern German city of Mannheim on Monday, Mannheimer Morgen reports.

According to preliminary information, there is at least one dead. The incident occurred in the city centre near Paradeplatz square. Roads in the area are blocked, police and rescue services are working there, residents have been advised to leave this part of Mannheim. Police have confirmed the operation in the area.

Mannheim24, citing eyewitnesses, reports that a black SUV drove at high speed into the crowd, it was travelling from Paradeplatz towards the Water Tower, a Mannheim landmark, along Planken Street. According to the portal, the suspect has been detained.

Mannheim is located in the state of Baden-Württemberg, about 100 kilometres northwest of Stuttgart. It is the second most populous city in the region (320,000 people).
