A museum dedicated to the master glassmaker and jeweller René Lalique has been targeted in a daring heist, with thieves making off with around 20 pieces worth an estimated €4 million. The break-in at the Musée Lalique in Wingen-sur-Moder is the latest in a string of high-value art thefts that have rattled France’s cultural institutions.
A swift raid under cover of darkness
According to French media reports on Monday, the perpetrators forced entry into the museum before smashing several display cases. The attack was highly focused; the intruders cleared exhibits exclusively from the jewellery hall and fled the scene within minutes. Authorities are still tabulating the precise financial damage, but initial estimates place the loss at roughly €4 million. In the wake of the theft, the museum administration has shuttered the gallery to the public.
A rising tide of organised art crime
The audacious robbery does not appear to be an isolated incident. Across 2025 and 2026, France has recorded a sharp uptick in thefts from museums and private collections, driven by a surge in activity from organised criminal networks specialising in jewellery and decorative arts. These groups typically exploit vulnerabilities in alarm systems and security protocols, executing rapid strikes that result in multimillion-euro losses.
A protected site, still vulnerable
Following a major heist at the Louvre in 2025, the museum honouring René Lalique — a titan of the Art Nouveau movement — was designated a site of special importance. Under this status, it should have been subject to enhanced surveillance and stringent protective measures.
The latest breach is likely to raise uncomfortable questions about why those safeguards failed to deter a criminal gang willing to shatter vitrines to seize a national treasure.
