Chad sets dates for presidential elections

Chad’s electoral agency announced the dates for the upcoming presidential elections, reaffirming its commitment to the country’s return to democracy.

The elections will be held in two rounds, with preliminary results expected by 7 July. According to the announcement, the first round is scheduled for 6 May, with the second round to be held on 22 June. The lists of candidates selected by the Constitutional Council will be published on 24 March.

Initially, the military, which came to power in 2021, proposed to hold elections within 18 months. However, they later extended the transition period to 10 October 2024. The electoral commission emphasised the importance of holding elections before this deadline to avoid a legal vacuum.

Chadian citizens voted in favour of a new constitution in December, sparking fears among the opposition that Mahamat Idriss Deby would remain in power. Chad is among the countries with military rule in West and Central Africa, fuelling concerns about democratic regression in a region that has witnessed eight coups since 2020.
