Channel crossings: Britain faces largest wave of migration in 3 years

Britain faced its largest influx of migrants across the English Channel in three years in 2025. Despite a slight decrease compared to the record year of 2022, the number of arrivals exceeded the figures for the previous two years, prompting major reforms in migration policy.

In 2025, 41,472 migrants arrived in the UK via the English Channel, the second highest figure in recorded history. This is 9% less than the record level of 2022 (45,774 people), but 13% more than in 2024 (36,816) and 41% higher than in 2023 (29,437).

The British Home Office notes that this influx of people is the largest in the last three years. Statistics show that previous measures have failed to stem the flow of illegal immigrants, forcing the government to take more decisive action on the international stage. A joint surveillance of the strait has now been established with Paris, as well as mechanisms for returning migrants to France.

Interior Minister Shabana Mahmood has announced major reforms: the asylum system has been recognised as uncontrollable and unfair. The authorities have stopped automatically granting the right to settle and reunite families for those who have arrived illegally. The aim of the reforms is to reduce the number of dangerous sea crossings across the English Channel.

About 50,000 illegal migrants have already been deported, and in the summer of 2025, the first agreement with France on the return of asylum seekers came into force. This was a signal to smugglers and traffickers that the old schemes for legalisation in Britain no longer work.

London’s refusal to grant automatic family reunification rights to illegal refugees will significantly complicate migrants’ plans to settle in the country. Border violators now face a long wait of up to 20 years and the constant threat of immediate deportation under new international agreements.
