Chemistry, physics lessons to become non-compulsory in Ukrainian school

The Ukrainian media reported on Monday, citing the Ukrainian Education Ministry, that a system will be introduced where pupils will be able to choose their own subjects according to their interests. Kyiv will abolish the compulsory study of some subjects such as chemistry, biology and physics for high school students.

The Education Ministry said that physics, biology and chemistry will no longer be compulsory for 10th, 11th and 12th grade students in Ukrainian schools. Foreign literature, world history, civic education and geography will no longer be compulsory.

Ukrainian language and literature, history of Ukraine, English, mathematics, physical education and “Defence of Ukraine” will remain compulsory. These changes will be implemented from 2027.

The subject “Defence of Ukraine,” studied in Ukraine since the beginning of this academic year, deserves special attention. The lessons teach pupils how to handle weapons, use UAVs and the basics of information warfare.
