Chilean President Gabriel Boric has declared a state of emergency due to widespread power outages in the country and imposed a curfew, local media reported on Wednesday, citing the republic’s authorities.
The curfew will be in effect from 22:00 to 06:00 local time.
“The blackout between the regions of Arica and Los Lagos continues: the president of the republic has decided to declare a state of emergency due to the disaster. The process necessary for this procedure has already begun and will take effect immediately,” the agency quotes Chilean Interior Minister Carolina Tohá as saying.
The measure applies to the region from Arica to Los Lagos. Compliance with the curfew will be controlled by 3 thousand servicemen.
In addition, it became known that in some areas of Chile and cities such as Concepcion and Valparaiso, the power supply was restored around 20:40 local time. However, there are still some interruptions in these localities.
The massive power outage in Chile, affecting 99% of the country and two provinces in Argentina, became known on February 25. The agency Infobae noted that more than 19 million people were left without electricity. As a result, the work of the underground and traffic lights was disrupted. Local authorities convened a meeting of the government committee to respond to national disasters.
