China and India should be partners, not rivals, FM Wang Yi says

Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Indian Foreign Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar in New Delhi on Monday and emphasised the importance of developing partnership relations between the two countries.

According to the diplomat, Beijing and New Delhi should see each other as allies and opportunities for joint growth, rather than rivals and threats.

In an official statement published on the Chinese Foreign Ministry’s website, Wang Yi noted that China and India, as the largest developing countries with a combined population of more than 2.8 billion people, are capable of playing a key role in shaping a fair world order. He stressed that co-operation between the two countries could serve as a model for other developing countries seeking independent development and a more equitable international system.

“Both sides should develop a correct strategic understanding, strengthen trust, resolve differences and expand areas of co-operation. This will consolidate positive trends and take bilateral relations to a new level,” Wang Yi said.

Wang Yi paid special attention to the need for joint efforts to maintain global stability and promote the idea of a multipolar world where different countries have equal rights and opportunities for development.

During his two-day visit, the Chinese minister intends to meet not only with Jaishankar, but also with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval. Talks with them are scheduled for Tuesday and are expected to focus on regional security issues and prospects for expanding trade and economic co-operation.
