China and North Korea call for closer coordination after high-level talks

China’s Foreign Minister has met North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, calling for closer co-operation between the two countries on key international and regional issues.

During the meeting on Friday (10 April), Wang Yi said China and North Korea should strengthen communication and coordination in response to what he described as a complex global environment, according to a statement from China’s foreign ministry.

Wang is currently on a two-day visit to Pyongyang, aimed at reinforcing bilateral ties following a slowdown in exchanges during the Covid-19 pandemic. The visit also comes at a time when North Korea has been developing closer relations with Moscow.

North Korean state media reported that Kim Jong Un emphasised the importance of increasing engagement at various levels, noting that stronger ties between the two countries would help protect their shared interests.

Wang also indicated that China is willing to expand practical co-operation through increased dialogue and interaction.

Earlier in the visit, he held talks with his North Korean counterpart, where both sides agreed to maintain the positive momentum in relations between Beijing and Pyongyang.

Separately, North Korea’s KCNA news agency confirmed the meeting between Kim and the Chinese foreign minister.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump is expected to visit China next month and has previously expressed interest in resuming discussions with North Korea.
