China calls for resumption of talks on Ukraine crisis

On Monday, Zhang Jun, China’s permanent representative to the United Nations, called for an early resumption of talks on the Ukrainian crisis.

“Diplomatic efforts must not be given up under any circumstances. We call for the prompt launch of direct engagement and the step-by-step resumption of negotiations with a view to forging consensus to end the hostilities.”

Zhang urged the international community and the UN to establish favourable conditions for the cessation of hostilities, stressing that other relevant parties should refrain from exacerbating the conflict.

The envoy argued that the consequences of NATO’s eastward expansion indicated that the pursuit of absolute security at the expense of the security of other countries would only deepen the security and trust gap.

The representative of China stated that countries with significant influence should take a responsible approach and refrain from politicising and using the global economy as an instrument or weapon. Instead, nations should unite to maintain global food, energy and financial security, as well as the stability of industrial and supply chains.

Zhang claimed that the ultimate solution to the Ukraine crisis is to work harder to build a community with a united future for humanity and shape a world with lasting peace and global security.

He declared that China would continue to stand on the side of peace, justice and international security.
