On Wednesday, China urged Iran and Pakistan to “avoid escalation” and “respect” national sovereignty after Tehran launched aerial strikes on Pakistani territory.
China’s Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning stated during a press conference in Beijing:
“China believes that the relations between countries should be handled based on the basic norms governing international relations underpinned by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and international law.”
Calling on Tehran and Islamabad to “exercise restraint, avoid actions that escalate the tension,” Mao added that “all countries’ sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity should be earnestly respected and protected.”
Islamabad criticised Iran on Tuesday evening for violating its airspace and launching an aerial strike. Pakistan then recalled its ambassador from Iran and suspended all high-level diplomatic exchange with Tehran.
Iran’s Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian claimed at the World Economic Forum that Iran had carried out airstrikes inside Pakistan.
