China slams Trump’s threat of BRICS tariffs

BRICS is an important platform for co-operation between developing countries, the association does not participate in bloc confrontation and is not directed against any state, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing on Monday.

“China has repeatedly made clear its position that there are no winners in trade and tariff wars, and that protectionism leads nowhere,” Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning said at a briefing.

Ning noted that “the BRICS mechanism is an important platform for co-operation among emerging markets and developing countries.”

The spokesperson also emphasised that the alliance “advocates openness, inclusiveness, and mutually beneficial co-operation and is not aimed against any country.”

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said on the social network Truth Social that Washington would impose additional trade tariffs of 10% on countries that support the BRICS policy. He stressed that there would be no exceptions.

The leaders of the alliance countries oppose Trump’s tariffs. The declaration of the BRICS-2025 summit participants notes that “unilateral tariff and non-tariff measures distort trade and contradict the rules of the World Trade Organisation (WTO).”

Earlier, Trump expressed concern about threats to the dollar as an international currency from BRICS. The countries of the alliance are discussing the possibility of creating a BRICS currency.

The BRICS summit is being held on July 6-7 in Rio de Janeiro.
