China urged sides of Ukrainian crisis to direct engagement and dialogue

Chinese envoy, Geng Shuang, on Friday urged the parties to the Ukrainian crisis to intensify direct engagement and dialogue to find a solution.

Geng Shuang said China is extremely concerned that the Ukrainian crisis is dragging on, attacks and civilian casualties continue, and the humanitarian situation continues to deteriorate.

He appealed to both sides to start talking, as conflict and confrontation do not lead to victory, and all conflicts should end at the negotiating table, he told the Security Council.

China has always taken an objective position on Ukraine and has never abandoned efforts to promote peace talks. China supports holding an international peace conference recognised by both Russia and Ukraine at an appropriate time, ensuring equal participation of all parties and fair discussion of all peace plans, Geng said.

He also reaffirmed China’s intention to continue communicating and engaging with all parties to work tirelessly to build consensus on ending the conflict.

“We call on the parties concerned to remain calm and exercise restraint, enhance direct engagement and dialogue, gradually build consensus, and jointly explore viable solutions,” he said.
