On 21 October, Special Envoy of the Chinese Government on the Middle East Issue Zhai Jun met with Secretary-General of the League of Arab States (LAS) Ahmed Aboul Gheit at the Cairo Summit for Peace on the Palestinian Question to discuss the Palestinian-Israeli situation – Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the People’s Republic of China.
Zhai Jun stated that China was deeply distressed over numerous civilian casualties caused by Israel’s war against Hamas. Beijing calls for an immediate ceasefire and ending of the war, as well as the provision of humanitarian aid to prevent a humanitarian catastrophe.
The Special Envoy emphasised that China supported a peaceful resolution to the conflict and that further escalation would only lead to a “vicious tit-for-tat circle”.

China staunchly supports the LAS and the efforts of Arab states to mediate for a rapid de-escalation of the military confrontation that has already claimed thousands of civilian lives.
LAS highly appreciates China’s unbiased and fair stance on the Palestinian issue and is willing to maintain close contacts with China to make coordinated efforts to put an end to the conflict between Palestine and Israel and revive the peace process in the Middle East.
Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated that Gaza was experiencing a perilous situation and a grave catastrophe. The Secretary-General calls on Palestine and Israel to cease fire and hostilities and to provide humanitarian aid and assistance to the people of the Gaza Strip as soon as possible.
The international community is responsible for the early resumption of peace negotiations and for facilitating a political settlement of the Palestinian issue.
