Cholera outbreak in Sudan’s capital kills 70 in 2 days

Seventy people have died from cholera in the Sudanese city of Khartoum in two days, Arab media reported on Thursday, citing health ministry data.

“In Khartoum, 942 new cases and 25 deaths were recorded in two days (on Wednesday), and the day before, 1,177 cases and 45 deaths,” the report said.

According to the country’s health ministry, 172 people died from the disease in the week leading up to May 27, 90% of them in Khartoum state.

“The surge in infections came weeks after drone strikes, blamed on the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), knocked out water and electricity supplies across the capital,” the health ministry said.

The war, now in its third year, has claimed the lives of tens of thousands of people, forced 13 million to flee their homes and led to what the UN has called “the world’s worst ongoing humanitarian crisis.” The country’s infrastructure is in ruins, with 90% of hospitals in conflict zones closed.
