In a decisive turn at the ballot box, the electorate of Bucharest has chosen a path of political continuity, selecting Ciprian Ciucu as the city’s next mayor.
The Sunday poll saw Ciucu, representing the National Liberal Party (PNL) and a key ally of Prime Minister Ilie Bolojan, secure a clear mandate with approximately 36% of the vote. His victory is viewed as a significant bolster for the sitting government’s reform agenda.
The race concluded with television presenter Anca Alexandrescu, who was endorsed by the national-conservative AUR party, placing second with around 22% support. In a result that defied numerous pre-election surveys, the Social Democratic Party’s candidate, Daniel Băluță, took the third place.
This outcome reinforces the current governing coalition’s standing in the capital. The win is anticipated to provide crucial breathing space for Prime Minister Bolojan’s administration, which is navigating a challenging political landscape.
The government is pursuing a series of contentious fiscal measures designed to curb a budget deficit reported at 9% of GDP. These include proposals for heightened taxation and a reduction in public sector roles. Furthermore, opposition groups have tabled a motion of no confidence, scheduled for 15 December, targeting planned reforms to the pension system.
“Beyond this victory, it’s probably a good thing that this coalition will continue. The government has promised reforms, and it’s time to implement them,” Ciucu stated. “From my political position, I will help ensure these reforms are carried out.”
This mayoral election marks a return to more traditional political leadership for Bucharest, following a period of notable upheaval. The city was previously governed by Nicușor Dan, who vacated the mayor’s office upon his inauguration as President of Romania in May.
