Climate activist Greta Thunberg to appear in London court

Climate activist Greta Thunberg will appear at London’s Westminster Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday.

Greta has been charged with public order offences in connection with an environmental protest in central London last month.

On 17 October, police detained the 20-year-old after she and dozens of demonstrators, holding hands, blocked the entrance to a hotel hosting an oil and gas conference.

Thunberg became known as the face of climate activism after she began holding weekly protests in Sweden in 2018, and she now travels around the world addressing crowds at marches and protests.

London police charged her on 18 October and released her on bail, and if found guilty on Wednesday, she faces a fine of up to £2,500 ($3,069). Before her arrest in Britain this year, she had been detained by police or removed from protests in Sweden, Norway and Germany.
