Climate activists blocked Germany’s Frankfurt Airport

Frankfurt Airport, Germany’s busiest, temporarily suspended flights after several climate activists blocked runways by sticking themselves to the runway.

The protest started on Thursday morning. Last Generation climate activists stated that six protesters broke through the fence and reached various points around the runways of the Frankfurt Airport with placards reading “Oil kills.”

A federal police spokesman reported that several climate activists were on the airport grounds. The group listed several countries in Europe and North America where similar actions were scheduled as part of a protest campaign launched on Wednesday.

Last Generation repeated its demand on Thursday that the German government should help forge and sign a global agreement regulating the phase-out of oil, gas, and coal by 2030.

Earlier on Wednesday, Germany’s Cologne-Bonn Airport also suspended flights for several hours after climate activists glued themselves to the runway, according to Reuters. Germany’s sixth-largest airport said it resumed operations in the morning after halting all flights shortly before 6 a.m. (0400 GMT).

Similar actions at other European airports have been curbed by authorities. British police also announced the arrest of nine members of climate action group Just Stop Oil for conspiring to disrupt Heathrow Airport, one of the world’s busiest.

However, Last Generation activist Ronja Kuenkler declared that Wednesday’s protest was just the beginning.

Today [Wednesday] was just the beginning. Over the next few weeks, we’ll repeat this in Germany, Europe, and around the world.
