Climate activists from the group “Last Generation” again organised protests at several German airports, leading to flight delays.
The activists stuck their hands to the tarmac on the airfield, but did not directly penetrate the runways. At Nuremberg airport, flights were suspended for about an hour, leading to one cancellation and several flight delays. At Köln Bonn airport, flights also had to be suspended.
Traffic at Köln Bonn airport was resumed from 05:25 a.m., but some delays were still expected, the airport said on social network X.
At Berlin-Brandenburg airport, the largest of those affected by the riots, police were on the scene and managed to remove two protesters who had entered the airfield through a fence, a police spokesman said, adding that flights were not affected.
There were no schedule changes at Stuttgart airport, as police were able to quickly apprehend the perpetrators.
The group shared photos and videos of the action on the X website. They show several activists in orange safety waistcoats sitting on the tarmac with banners reading “Oil kills” and “Sign the treaty.”
The protests were part of the global “Oil kills” campaign. The group said in a statement:
Together with allied protest movements, including in the US and Canada, the Last Generation is calling for the signing of a fossil fuel phase-out treaty. The German government should commit to international negotiations with the aim of signing an intergovernmental treaty to phase out fossil fuels by 2030.
German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser called the activists’ actions “dangerous and stupid” in a post on social media X, and called on airports to better ensure security at their facilities.
