CNN will announce on Thursday that it will cut hundreds of staff as it refocuses its operations on online audiences, US media reported.
The job cuts will not affect CNN’s most prominent names who are under contract. CNN currently employs about 3,500 people worldwide.
The cuts will help CNN reduce production costs and unify teams, the network said. Meanwhile, filming of some shows that are organised in New York and Washington may move to Atlanta, where production will be less costly.
Massive layoffs are also expected at NBC News this week. The exact number of workers scheduled to be laid off has not been reported, but the number will not exceed 50.
CNN launched paid access to materials on the news site in October 2024. Such a measure will not affect users who read a few articles a month, the company said. The subscription costs $3.99 per month. In early January 2025, CNN CEO Mark Thompson said the company had received more than $70 million in investment from Warner Bros. Discovery. Some of that money will be used to expand its staff in areas where CNN sees potential for growth.
