Coca-Cola agreed to use real cane sugar in US, Trump says

Coca-Cola has agreed to use natural cane sugar in beverages produced for the American market, US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday.

“I have been speaking to Coca-Cola about using REAL Cane Sugar in Coke in the United States, and they have agreed to do so,” Trump said in a post on his Truth Social platform. “I’d like to thank all of those in authority at Coca-Cola. This will be a very good move by them — You’ll see. It’s just better!” Trump wrote on his Truth Social page.

According to Reuters, the Trump administration’s “Make America Healthy Again” initiative is linked to a movement promoting healthy lifestyles, which is supported by Health Minister Robert F. Kennedy Jr. and seeks changes in food ingredients and the elimination of ingredients such as artificial colours.

According to the agency, Coca-Cola uses high-fructose corn syrup in the production of Coca-Cola for the American market, while in some other countries the company uses cane sugar.

Kennedy has previously criticised the high consumption of sugar in the American diet and noted that updated dietary guidelines, due to be published in the summer, will call for the consumption of “whole foods.”

The White House and Coca-Cola representatives have not yet commented on Trump’s statement.

The US president is a fan of diet cola. In March, he told reporters that there is a button on his desk in the Oval Office to order the drink. According to Trump, many visitors to the White House think the button activates nuclear weapons.

In 2021, Trump’s successor and now predecessor Joe Biden removed the Coke button from the Oval Office, which had been installed by the Republican during his first term as president. After returning to the White House, Trump put the button back.
