Congo denies reports of coup attempt

Congo’s government has denied rumours of a coup attempt against President Denis Nguesso, according to MEHR News agency (MNA).

The country’s Information Minister Thierry Moungalla posted this on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday.

Earlier, some social media claimed that a coup attempt was underway in the country. The news was based on the president’s absence at the 78th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in New York, US.

The reports did not mention the identity of the coup organisers but suggested that the commander of the presidential guard was involved in an attempt to seize power.

Moungalla condemned the news, calling it fake.

We reassure public opinion about the calm that reigns and invite people to calmly go about their activities.

Denis Sassou Nguesso is a former military officer who has been president since 1997.

Reports of another coup come amid growing concern about the regression of democracy in Africa, where power has recently been replaced by military means.
