A complete failure of Cuba’s national electricity grid has plunged its 10 million citizens into darkness, as the island grapples with a catastrophic fuel shortage exacerbated by a tightening US embargo.
The country’s state-run operator, Unión Eléctrica, confirmed the nationwide blackout on Monday, stating that restoration efforts were already underway. The cause of the catastrophic failure remains under investigation.
The collapse occurs against a backdrop of mounting economic and political pressure on Havana from the Trump administration. Under the stringent blockade, Cuba has been able to secure only 40% of its essential fuel requirements. Since January 2026, Washington has permitted just a single Russian tanker to deliver oil to the island. That shipment of 730,000 barrels arrived in late March and was entirely depleted by May.
The American embargo has dramatically worsened chronic power outages affecting the population. In May, authorities officially acknowledged that the nation’s fuel reserves were completely exhausted.
This is not the first time the fragile grid has buckled. The entire country was left without power for several hours in mid-March, and similar failures struck the eastern provinces in May. In a bid to conserve dwindling energy supplies, the government has imposed rolling blackouts, which can last up to 24 hours at a stretch.
Desperate to resolve the protracted crisis, the Cuban government has launched sweeping reforms, including the most significant partial privatisation of the economy in 65 years. In June 2026, the leadership proposed nearly 200 market-oriented reforms in an effort to persuade Washington to lift the fuel blockade.
However, negotiations between Cuba and the United States have reached a stalemate. Through a campaign of economic and political pressure, Donald Trump is seeking to force a change of government in Havana in favour of an administration more amenable to Washington.
