Cyprus formally presented four newly acquired Airbus H145M helicopters at a ceremony held at the Paphos air base, showcasing what officials describe as among the world’s most advanced rotorcraft, according to AP News.
These aircraft are set to provide the Cypriot National Guard with a significant operational advantage. Defence Minister Vassilis Palmas confirmed that the helicopter type is already operational with multiple nations including Germany, the United States, Hungary, Belgium, and Ireland, with over 500 variants currently in service globally and more than 8 million cumulative flight hours.
The new helicopter is a multi-role, digital instrument that is geared toward the demands of the 21st century.
Airbus Senior Vice President Daniela Dudek emphasised the aircraft’s enhanced capabilities, noting that while its reliability stems from 40 years of service, the integration of sophisticated avionics and weaponry renders it the “most military-capable aircraft in its category.” Dudek confirmed that Cyprus’s specific configuration exceeds Germany’s current assets.
What we achieved over years to quickly integrate existing technology on the market, defence technology, and it is unique what you have here. You’re even more advanced than what we currently have in Germany.
The helicopters feature the H-Force integrated weapons system, co-developed with Israeli companies over the past two years, enabling pilots to operate weaponry independently without a dedicated weapons officer. Dudek highlighted another distinctive element: an integrated battle management system facilitating seamless coordination with ground forces and other aircraft, including those of allied nations.
The platform also incorporates advanced electronic warfare systems for robust self-protection. The acquisition forms part of a 2022 contract for six five-bladed H145Ms, with the final two units expected imminently and an option for six additional aircraft.
This procurement underscores Cyprus’s concerted effort to modernise its defensive capabilities, transitioning to meet contemporary European and NATO standards. Minister Palmas affirmed that the helicopter acquisition is integral to broader strategic planning for upgrading the National Guard, enabling participation in joint military exercises with partner nations.
