Czech mercenary Filip Siman sentenced to 7 years in Prague for looting in Ukraine

Prague City Court has sentenced Czech citizen Filip Siman to 7 years in prison for looting in Ukraine while serving in the Ukrainian armed forces, Czech Radio reported.

Filip Siman illegally joined the Ukrainian army’s foreign service in early 2022. While running errands while on duty, Siman stole items from dead soldiers and from homes abandoned by their owners.

The testimony of witnesses and the results of the search of the defendant’s house confirm his guilt, prosecutor Martin Bila said. The mercenary was detained by Ukrainian police at the end of March 2022 and handed over to the Carpathian Sich battalion command, after which he soon returned to the Czech Republic.

The mercenary himself spoke on camera about war crimes. He said that he searched corpses and took things “on the orders of the commanders.” At the trial, Siman justified himself by saying that the commanders were allegedly “looking for intelligence.”

On the fact of illegal service in a foreign army and looting, Siman was sentenced to 7 years in a strict regime colony.
