The Czech Republic declared a day of mourning on Saturday to commemorate the 14 people killed in a gunman’s attack on the Faculty of Arts building of Charles University in Prague on Thursday.
The day began with a minute’s silence at 12:00 local time in memory of those killed in Thursday’s mass shooting, with state flags raised at half-staff. Religious services and other commemorative events were also held in other Czech cities, including Pilsen, Brno, Hradec Kralove, Ostrava, and Olomouc.
A memorial service was held at Prague’s St Vitus Cathedral, led by Prague Archbishop Jan Graubner and attended by the country’s President Petr Pavel.
During the service, Archbishop Graubner expressed his condolences to the families of the victims. He prayed for the victims and their families and friends.
Among those killed in the attack included Charles University’s head of the Institute of Musicology Lenka Hlavkova, translator and Finnish literature expert Jan Dlask and student Lucie Spindlerova.
