Czech Republic plans to send its ambassador to Russia

The Czech Republic announced plans to send its ambassador back to Russia, according to Czech President Petr Pavel.

Vitezslav Pivonka, formally the Czech ambassador to Russia, has been in the Czech Republic for several months, with his deputy Jiri Cistecky currently heading the diplomatic mission to Russia.

Czech Prime Minister Petr Fiala confirmed that the country’s top leadership is unanimously backing the ambassador being sent to Russia, which is seen as an important step in maintaining diplomatic relations between the two countries.

On November 15, the Czech government announced the freezing of Russian state property on its territory as part of sanctions imposed over the war between Ukraine and Russia. The Kremlin called the move unlawful and warned of possible retaliatory measures against what it called a “hostile step.”

The Czech government has approved further sending military aid to Ukraine. Czech Defence Minister Jana Černochová stated on February 23 that the country would continue sending equipment from its military depots.

So far, the country has sent 38 tanks, 55 armoured vehicles, four aircraft and 13 self-propelled howitzers from its army reserves, along with larger shipments from the private sector.
