David Cameron returns as UK Foreign Secretary

Rishi Sunak appointed David Cameron as the UK’s new Foreign Secretary, according to Politico.

Cameron stepped down as Prime Minister in 2016 after the defeat in the Brexit referendum. He became a life peer in the House of Lords to take over the government. Cameron’s appointment comes as Sunak conducts a major reshuffle in the government in an attempt to end his Conservative Party’s huge deficit in opinion polls.

The staff reshuffle began with the sacking of Home Secretary Suella Braverman, a key figure in the party’s right wing. James Cleverly, formerly Foreign Secretary, replaced Braverman at the Home Office.

The Labour Party accused Sunak of using the former prime minister as a “life raft.”

Sunak and Cameron stood on opposite sides of the 2016 Brexit referendum. Cameron, who led a coalition government in 2010 and won a dramatic Tory election in 2015, recently criticised the Prime Minister for his decision to remove crucial parts of the HS2 rail link.

Though I may have disagreed with some individual decisions, it is clear to me that Rishi Sunak is a strong and capable prime minister, who is showing exemplary leadership at a difficult time.

In addition, the former Prime Minister’s reputation has suffered due to a lobbying scandal in 2021. As prime minister, he heralded a so-called “Golden Era” in Britain’s relations with China and welcomed President Xi Jinping for a state visit.

After his appointment, Cameron declared that the UK would “stand by our allies, strengthen our partnerships and make sure our voice is heard.”

“I want to help him to deliver the security and prosperity our country needs and be part of the strongest possible team that serves the United Kingdom and that can be presented to the country when the general election is held.”

However, Pat McFadden of the opposing Labour Party used Cameron’s appointment to denounce Sunak.

A few weeks ago, Rishi Sunak said David Cameron was part of a failed status quo, now he’s bringing him back as his life raft.
