Greece continues to extinguish the centres of a fire that continues for a third day in green areas of the Corinth region, with new evacuations announced, Greek media reported.
The forest fire near the coast of the Gulf of Corinth has been ongoing since Sunday evening and has led to the deaths of two people. 390 firefighters and more than a hundred pieces of equipment have been involved, as well as other government and volunteer agencies.
The scale of the disaster has prompted European Union countries to assist in the extinguishment. Two firefighters were also injured on Monday.
Efforts by firefighting teams are focused on keeping the fire away from homes. Some houses have already burned.
On Tuesday morning, residents of Sofiana village were instructed to evacuate to the neighbouring village of Reti.
The important motorway from Corinth to Patras, which had been closed since Monday night due to the fire, is once again accessible to traffic. In parts of the surrounding villages, schools will remain closed for safety reasons.
