Death toll rises in Gaza as UK stars call on PM Starmer to stop arms sales to Israel

Twenty-eight people have been killed and 179 wounded in Israeli attacks over the past day in the Gaza Strip, the Palestinian Health Ministry said on Thursday.

“Over the past 24 hours, 28 dead and 179 wounded have been admitted to hospitals in the Gaza Strip,” the statement said.

The ministry also added that the death toll since March 18 had reached 3,924, with 11,267 wounded.

On the night of March 18, the Israeli Defence Forces resumed strikes on the Gaza Strip. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the attacks continued because the Palestinian movement Hamas had refused to accept the US plan to extend the ceasefire and release hostages.

Dua Lipa, Gary Lineker, and Benedict Cumberbatch urge PM to “end UK complicity” in Gaza

More than 300 prominent Britons, including actor Benedict Cumberbatch and singers Annie Lennox and Dua Lipa, have called on the British government to completely stop arms supplies to Israel and support the Palestinians.

The stars signed an open letter to British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday.

The appeal was prepared by the British charity Choose Love, which helps refugees. It calls on the government to immediately suspend all arms shipments from the UK to Israel, allow humanitarian organisations immediate access to the Gaza Strip, and commit to facilitating a ceasefire.

“We urge you to take immediate action to end the UK’s complicity in the horrors unfolding in Gaza,” the letter reads.

The letter was also signed by singer Paloma Faith, bands Massive Attack and Primal Scream, actors Riz Ahmed, Lena Headey, Tilda Swinton, Maxine Peake, Zoë Ashton, Irish actress Nicola Coughlan, British director Danny Boyle, and former England footballer and sports commentator Gary Lineker.

“We cannot call what is happening “unbearable” and then do nothing. The whole world is watching, and history will not forget. The children of Gaza cannot wait a minute longer,” the letter said.
