Denmark to lead EU Council with focus on security, competitiveness, green transition

Denmark took over the presidency of the Council of the European Union on Tuesday, replacing Poland.

Over the next six months, Copenhagen will coordinate the work of EU countries and set the agenda. This is Denmark’s eighth presidency.

As EU Council President, Denmark will focus on several important areas. First and foremost, the country intends to help European businesses by simplifying legislation and reducing bureaucracy. This should strengthen the EU’s competitiveness.

Special attention will be paid to the green transition. Denmark will work on new climate targets and support the development of renewable energy.

Another important priority is the security of the EU economy. This involves reducing dependence on supplies from other countries and protecting against unfair competition. To this end, there are plans to change some tax and customs rules.

Modern technologies will not be neglected either. Denmark intends to promote the development of AI and quantum computing. At the same time, measures will be taken to protect internet users, especially children and young people.

In addition, Denmark intends to work actively on social policy and healthcare issues.

The next six months under Denmark’s presidency will be no less eventful than the previous period under Poland’s leadership. Analysts note that Copenhagen will continue Warsaw’s priorities, especially in the field of security and defence.

On January 1, 2026, the presidency of the EU Council will pass to Cyprus.
